Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in the music industry?
My name is Musawenkosi Somhaya, but you can call me Musa6. I’m 24 years old and originally from Transkei Lady Frere. I moved to Cape Town for a few years before settling in Scenery Park, Eastern Cape, which I consider my true hometown. My journey in the music industry began in a hip-hop community where I contributed as a dancer. Eventually, I transitioned from writing poetry to rapping, and that's how my musical career began.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music, specifically in rap?
My inspiration to write music came from an unexpected source—Rihanna's track "Take a Bow." Watching it on Trace TV around the time it was released left a significant impression on me. Kanye West's "Graduation" album also played a big role in my early music inspiration. My mother used to print out lyrics for me from her workplace, which sparked my interest in writing my own raps.
Aside from music, what are some of your other hobbies or interests that people might not know about?
I am deeply immersed in all forms of art. I love to write, paint, and draw—anything that involves creativity and working with my hands. Writing is my first love, but I find joy in expressing myself through various artistic mediums.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they shaped your own style and sound?
Michael Jackson is an honorable mention for his impact on me from a young age. As I've grown, my musical taste has expanded far beyond hip-hop. I now enjoy folk music and aquatic folk for their honesty and emotional depth. Artists like Keaton Henson, Frank Ocean, Passenger, Tracy Chapman, and Sam Smith have significantly influenced my sound and style.
What has been the most memorable or special moment of your music career so far?
The most memorable moment for me has been my growth as an artist. Being able to express myself musically in the way I want to, and knowing that I have a specific audience that appreciates my work, has been incredibly rewarding. Celebrity interactions are not something I prioritize; my focus is on artistic growth and connection with my listeners.
Your recently released EP, "YARK," has gained a lot of attention. Can you share the inspiration behind the project and what it means to you?
"YARK" emerged while I was working on a project called "Pornography," which explored the influence of the adult film industry. However, I realized I lacked sufficient information to do the subject justice. During a creative break, I wrote "TALE & SALES," which evolved into "YARK." The project became a celebration of honesty and talent, with "YARK" symbolizing enjoyment and personal expression.
How would you describe the overall theme or message conveyed in your EP?
The theme of "YARK" revolves around enjoying honest moments and celebrating personal talent. It's about creating a connection through genuine expression rather than conforming to external expectations. The project aims to unite people through its authenticity and relatable experiences.
How do you unwind and find inspiration outside of music? Do you have any rituals or activities that help you recharge creatively?
Rest is crucial for me. Whenever I feel my thoughts or creative output aren't aligning with my vision, I take a break. This doesn't mean stopping work entirely; instead, I shift focus. Sometimes, I freestyle to different beats, allowing new lines and ideas to emerge organically.
Scenery Park is your hometown. How has growing up and living there influenced your music and style?
Scenery Park has significantly influenced my music by providing a unique perspective. While I don't identify solely as a "hood guy," the environment has shaped my content and expression. It offers a rich source of cultural material that I can draw upon, giving my music an authentic touch that resonates with listeners.
Can you share a fun or surprising fact about yourself that your fans might not expect?
I spent four years in design school at university, studying product industrial design. Despite my focus on music, this background in design is a part of who I am, though my passion for music overshadows it.
How do you handle criticism or negative feedback? How do you stay focused and motivated despite any challenges you may face?
Self-awareness is key. Understanding that not everyone will agree with my perspective helps me remain grounded. I accept that our experiences and backgrounds shape our opinions, and it's fine if others don't understand or appreciate my work. However, when criticism becomes harmful or influences others negatively, I find it problematic.
If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Zahara was always on my bucket list for a collaboration. Additionally, working with Keaton Henson, Msaki, and even artists like Cassper Nyovest would be incredible. These artists have significantly influenced my musical journey, and their unique styles inspire me.
How do you see your music evolving in the future, and what goals do you have for your career?
I don't want to limit myself to just rap music. My future could involve painting, portrait work, software development, and more. My goals are to continually reach people and express myself authentically. Consistency and pushing artistic boundaries are my main objectives.
What do you enjoy most about connecting with your fans, and how do they inspire and support you?
Connecting with listeners who resonate with my music is incredibly fulfilling. I release my music for free because I see it as an art form meant to be shared. The support I receive, especially through merchandise sales, helps sustain my artistic endeavors and motivates me to keep creating.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are just starting their journey in the industry?
Focus on the creative process before thinking about the business side. Art should come from a place of authenticity, not commercial appeal. When artists prioritize business over creativity, it often dilutes the original value of the art. Aspiring musicians should stay true to their artistic vision and let the business aspects follow naturally.
*As an emerging artist, what challenges have you faced in the music industry, and how have you overcome them?*
One of the biggest challenges I've faced is gaining visibility in a saturated industry. It's tough to stand out when there are so many talented artists out there. I overcame this by staying true to my unique style and not compromising my artistic integrity. Networking and building relationships with other artists and industry professionals have also been crucial in navigating these challenges.
What role does social media play in your career, and how do you use it to engage with your audience?
Social media plays a significant role in my career. It's a powerful tool for reaching a wider audience and connecting with fans on a personal level. I use platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to share updates about my music, behind-the-scenes content, and snippets of my daily life. Engaging with my audience through comments, direct messages, and live sessions helps me build a strong and loyal fanbase.
Can you describe your creative process when working on new music?
My creative process is quite fluid. It often starts with a concept or a feeling I want to explore. From there, I might write lyrics, develop melodies, or create beats that align with that idea. I also collaborate with other musicians and producers to bring different perspectives into my work. Experimentation is a big part of my process; I like to try new sounds and techniques to keep my music fresh and innovative.
*What impact do you hope your music will have on listeners?*
I hope my music resonates with listeners on a deep, emotional level. I want it to be a source of comfort, inspiration, and connection. Music has the power to unite people and provide solace during difficult times, and I hope my songs can offer that to those who listen. Ultimately, I want my music to make a positive impact and leave a lasting impression.
*What upcoming projects or collaborations are you excited about?*
I'm currently working on a new album that explores a variety of themes and genres. It's an ambitious project that I believe will showcase my growth as an artist. I'm also excited about some upcoming collaborations with artists I've admired for a long time. These partnerships will bring new energy and ideas to my music, and I can't wait to share them with my audience.
How do you balance your personal life with your career as a musician?
Balancing personal life and a music career can be challenging, but it's essential. I make sure to set aside time for family, friends, and self-care. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, is crucial for sustaining my creativity and energy. Having a strong support system and clear boundaries helps me manage both aspects of my life effectively.
