Behind the Biz with LATRIX.

This week on East Side Insider " Behind the Biz" with LATRIX.

. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in dance and photography?

I started dancing when I was four years old  I was living in Mdantsane NU8 back then I spent half of my childhood there and then I moved to UNIT P  in 2005 which is where I found love in PHOTOGRAPHY.

.What inspired you to pursue a career in both dance and photography?

I have always been passionate about dancing, it came to me naturally because it runs in the family, my Aunt was a dancer so I started it when I was four I started dancing the PANTSULA dance when I was a kid and then I got introduced to Michael Jackson and Chris Brown. Photography came up when I entered a modeling agency back in 2014 I was a model I fell in love with photography with lenses always seen photographers carrying cameras doing their thing. I started working on it using a Mobile phone and I noticed I was good at it when I did the editing I was passionate about the following picture I took and how am I going to edit it. And then I carried on with photography and dancing.

How do you balance your time between your dance and photography projects?

.When it comes to balancing I make time for both and it is rare to have been booked for both dance and photography, however, I got more gigs for photography than dancing. Dancing gigs are rare so most of the time I just juggle around and do videos upload on social networks for my fans who like my dancing.

Can you share any notable experiences or achievements in your career as a dancer and photographer?

.On dancing  I won a talent show of CATALIA FOUNDATION which was held in 2023 30th of September I won first prize which was the first time winning anything in dance. Photography I haven't got any accolades or achievements but hopefully, one day, I will do so.

Could you describe your artistic style in both dance and photography?

.In dance I mix because I'm a dancer not just a hip-hop dancer I can dance amapiono, pantsula, and other dances, for example when I do hip-hop  I mix it with pop and lock I  also do robotic dubstep. In photography I do film-theme photography I create a series of stories through pictures.

Are there any specific themes or messages that you aim to convey through your work?

.Through dance the message I convey is 'movement is a free will' because what I do is trying to mimic or portray or play out the lyrics of the music I'm dancing to, I portray them through the movement I do. When it comes to photography I just take random pictures that give people some nostalgic moments I guess because every time I take a picture and upload it on my page I get comments from people saying they love the sunset aesthetic view on the pictures.

How do you choose your subjects or themes for your dance performances and photography projects?

.Through dance what I do If got a gig for example and it is about heritage I will pick a song that is heritage and then try to mix it with my dance movements so that it could blend in with the theme. In photography it's difficult because I have many crazy ideas sometimes I don't even sleep so I just choose the ones I can deliver at a certain time.

Which photographers or dancers have influenced your creative journey?

.Photography I'm inspired by Ofentse Mwase, Nigel Stockl, and Clout Cassette those guys inspire me a lot but most of my stuff is inspired by Nigel Stockl. When it comes to dance I had my inspiration from my Idols like Kida the Great, Les Twins, and Fikshun.

What challenges have you faced in your career and how have you overcome them?

.Challenges in photography I faced are people who take advantage because they know me they give their budget and do not ask me what is MY budget, others want favors and I am currently facing one at the moment. In dancing, I'll be booked and told I'll be doing it just for exposure, but I've managed to overcome them by selling myself to them because I know I'll be exposing or spreading my work and my name to the world the more I do that the more I will get people who want to work with me.

How does your South African background and the community of UNIT P influence your artistic expression?

.South Africa as a whole is very static even UNIT P is like that but living in one place I no longer endure inspiration unless I take a walk or a different route and create something different like  Xhosa-themed pictures or series in parts/places in the Eastern Cape.

Can you share any upcoming projects or collaborations that we can look forward to?

.Not at the moment I can say much but I'll be working with EAST SIDE INSIDER, you guys are in fortune it's something I look forward to.

Do you have any advice for aspiring dancers and photographers who are looking to pursue a similar career path?

.Brothers and sisters who want to pursue a photography career, know that photography is not that basic it's not easy it's not pick up a camera click a button, and boom you have a paycheck you just have to be patient and passionate for this thing because it may look like easy but when it comes to editing is a lot you have to be patient and be disciplined. Dancing requires a lot of stamina if you don't work out you are too lazy to hit a gym it's going to be hard to improve your skills also to dance for a longer duration.

How do you engage with your audience through your performances and photographs?

.I love engaging with the audience when I dance I enjoy it so much their feedback gives me more adrenaline that I'm doing good I'm entertaining them correctly their feedback gives me joy. In photography receiving compliments on my work and people saying "Your pictures deserve to be at the art gallery and being auctioned for millions" I appreciate that because it proves that what I'm doing is good and people are watching and they also rooting for me so shout out to them so that why I will always keep on going.

What role does storytelling play in your artistic work?

.A very big one when I release my work [photography& dance] I make sure people grasp the meaning behind it or someone can relate to it.

How do you utilize dance and photography as mediums for self-expression?

.Dancing helps me to express myself through movement when I'm facing some hardship like depression, anxiety, or being angry  I just play music and move my body just to relax my mind. Photography is similar to what I do at dancing, I could just take a picture of the sky when it is grey and that is a symbol of sadness and if I feel happy I would take lively bright pictures.
