              MELODIES UNVEILED

                             with

                            Yihlo

Join us as we take a deep dive into his journey, exploring the influences, challenges, and triumphs that have shaped his unique sound and perspective. From his early days in Gqeberha to his latest EP release, get ready to embark on a captivating musical odyssey with Uyihlo. Let's dive in!

Can you tell us who is Uyihlo and where he's based at, and how you got started in the music industry?

UYIHLO ngu Jama ka S’jadu, uNgxib’ enoboya. He was born and bred eGqeberha in the Eastern Cape. He is currently based in Johannesburg, his start in music was kickstarted by inspiration from none other than Dwayne Carter - is it just me, or do 90% of current rappers say this, that’s how legendary that man is.

As a rapper from EC, what unique experience or challenges have you faced in the music industry, and how have they influenced your style and music?

I wouldn’t say there are any experiences that are unique to me that aren’t faced by any artist from any province that pursues a music career. These include access to resources and funding to scale your career. I would mention the language barrier at times, however, isiXhosa is the second most spoken language in South Africa and the clicks connect. That’s about it, imali chief.

Your recently released EP, " Severance Package," has received a lot of positive feedback. Can you tell us more about the creative process behind the EP and what message you aimed to convey through it's songs?

That project, like most of my recordings, was mainly recorded in solitude. That gives me the comfort to be as creative and stupid as possible during the process. However, I got a lot of help from the homies when it came to arranging the project, and I won’t lie that changed how the whole thing would’ve been received.

How do you feel your upbringing in the Eastern Cape has shaped your perspective and influenced your lyrical content?

It has shaped it in many ways, from the environment I grew up in, to the rites of passage I had to go through culturally. Those are lessons that will never be lost to me, and they shape the way I carry myself in different spaces. Gqeberha is an urban center, but it’s also not as fast as the larger and more robust cities. So it’s a perfect blend of growing up in a calm environment that also moves at a different pace at times

Are there any specific artists or influences from your region that have had a significant impact on your music career?

From the Eastern Cape, it has to be Anatii, iFani and Yanga Chief. They’ve done a phenomenal job for the gents like myself that are cut from the same mother tongue cloth

With the success of your recent projects, how do you plan to leverage your platform to uplift and support other up-and-coming artists from EASTERN CAPE or South Africa as a whole?

I won’t even lie, right now the entire focus is to keep growing and have enough sustainability to be able to support other acts. But before that is done, it’s important to set up infrastructure for my brand, and have a well-oiled and paid for machine that runs well. “Right now I’m struggling for money nigga, when I get on I’ma pick you up.” - never related to a Riky Rick song more than that one.

Could you share any upcoming projects or collaborations that your fans can look forward to?

I definitely got a project in the pipeline before we wrap up the first half of the year, with a little bit of genre bending leaning towards Afro-popish and rap tastes. In the past, I had a very high and consistent output. Which was and still is great, but now I want to take more time between releases to allow the audience to sit with the projects. Enjoy Severance Package for now

How do you balance staying true to your artistic vision while also adapting to the ever- changing trends and expectations within the music industry?

That’s a solid one, favourite question of the interview. This one isn’t easy to do, especially if you are always in the dead centre of the algorithm. So I intenionally unplug from social media from time to time, while remaining in touch with what is happening in the streets. No matter what, I stay true to my sound because I honestly think it’s phenomenal, but I don’t shy away from commercial viability in my own style.

What was the significance of your song " Pappas" debuting on the 5Fm Hip Hop show and eventually reaching the number one spot? How did that achievement impact your career?

That was great. I hadn’t been tapped in to radio much at the time, and you know artists have this anger towards radio because of the PAYOLA and all the other politics. and that was myself included as well. But when it happened, it was a nice pat on the back.

What advice would you give to aspiring rappers or musicians from the East Side who are looking to make their mark in the industry?

The most cliche advice ever, just before yourself. The market is saturated with other rappers and musicians, the only way to stand out is to be yourself. If they don’t like it, it’s fine you still did you and you expressed yourself. If they do, amazing, everybody eats.
